The word of God is powerful.  It exposes the real us.  Many Christians have experienced the reality of this verse.  We are listening to a sermon and all of a sudden it seems the words are just for you.  It is as though your mother called the preacher that morning and told him what you were up to.  But that isn’t what happened.  It is the power of God’s Word.  It is amazing, it is nothing short of miraculous how the God of the Universe uses His Words to get our attention.  If we will only listen, we will hear and feel as He speaks to us.

In the book of Romans, Paul tells the church that the words of God are part of His power that is used to save us from hell.  This power can save every one of us—His words tell us how we can get right in God’s sight.  (Romans 1:16)

The word of God will straighten us out and teach us what is right.  All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.  It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.  (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

God inspired men to write the Bible hundreds of years ago.  When Paul wrote this to Timothy he was referring to the Old Testament.  And now we have the New and Old Testament to teach us what is true.  The Bible will make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  Some of us don’t want to be told what to do—we hard-headed independent cowboy types can be very unteachable.  It is too bad that many of us won’t look for help until we are rock bottom.  God, who loves us so very much, is the most awesome of disciplinarians.  He will deliver His words and they will sink in like a sharp knife, but the God of all Comfort doesn’t leave us to bleed to death.  He gives the punch, then when we wholeheartedly turn to Him, He works on our behalf to turn the horrible mess we have made into something good. (Romans 8:28)  The words of discipline are hard because He wants us to stop destroying ourselves.  God gets rough so we might do what is right.  God trains us like we train horses.  Some are hard to teach and some are easy.  God’s discipline is perfectly suited to each of us.  When we train horses we want to prepare them to do what we want, the best they can.  God trains us so that we will be equipped to do the good things He wants us to do. 

The word of God is truth.  Jesus tells us the truth will set us free.  (John 8:32)

TRUTH—doesn’t seem to be much of that in the world today.  The world always seems to put their own ‘spin’ on it; spinning the truth to their advantage.

The word of God gives us hope and encouragement.  (Romans 15:4)

The word of God is eternal, it will never change or disappear.  (Matthew 5:18)

Webster’s dictionary defines ‘word’ as the smallest unit of meaningful communication by language.  When we read the Bible we are reading meaningful communication from God to man.   All of God’s words are meaningful.  Many people have a hard time listening.  For some of us our ears stop working when our mouths are in motion.  God is worth listening to.  His words are not opinions, they are truth and worth knowing.  When we fellowship with God, we must hear with our ears, see with our eyes, feel with our heart, and our mouth shuts down to an occasional whisper.
