Benefits to obedience!
It is incredible the way God tells us what to do and then gives a promise or guarantee when we do it. When my son was in junior high and learning the parts of speech and diagramming sentences he could see no purpose in learning it. I asked his teacher if she could give my son a reason for learning how to diagram sentences. She got this blank look on her face and said, “I don’t have a reason.” The point of the story is my son had no motivation to learn because he didn’t see how it benefited him.
But hallelujah, God tells us what to do and then what he will do for us when we obey. Our actions influence us, our spouse, our children and who knows how many more. God’s promises should motivate us to do all that He says for not only will we but others will benefit. God’s rewards for obedience to him are fabulous.
The benefit of trusting God with all of our heart!
In Proverbs 3:5-6 we are told to totally trust God and not to lean on what we think is right. The promise—our paths will be made straight. Wrong choices can get us in a world of hurt and take us places we never wanted. Making a wrong investment can cause bankruptcy. Not following God’s code for moral living, well we don’t have enough space to even list where that may take you. Trusting God helps us not to get sidetracked and derailed into an unimaginable nightmare of a life. God guarantees that the path of our lives will be set on a straight course.
The benefit of fearing God!
In Proverbs 3:7-8 we are told not to be wise in our own eyes, but to fear God and shun evil. And the reason—this will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Being wise in our own eyes is the sin of pride. Often in Scriptures we are told to repent of pride. Pride hurts our health.
Fear of God is a holy reference for God.
Our bodies benefit if we fear God and shun evil. Here are two examples to consider. The Bible calls worry sin. Worry causes stress, stress causes sickness. Envy is a sin. Proverbs tells us that envy rots the bones. Sin isn’t healthy. Health follows Godly living.
The benefit of honoring God with our wealth!
In Proverbs 3:9-10 we are told to honor God with our wealth. Synonyms for honor are exalt, magnify, or glorify. In the New Living Translation we are told to honor God with our wealth and with the best part of everything we produce. It is easy to forget to honor, magnify, or glorify God with our wealth. But the incentive to those that do is fantastic. We cannot out-give God when our hearts are right!
This morning I looked at what my Matthew Henry Commentary had to say about this verse.
“God shall bless thee with an increase of that which is for use, not for show or ornament… Those that do good with what they have shall have more to do more good with. We mistake if we think that giving will undo us and make us poor. No, giving for God’s honor will make us rich.”
The Bible is true. Oh, precious people believe.
