  New Testament

In the New Testament of the Bible there are four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.  Each of these books talk about the life of Jesus.  Eternal life is the main topic of the book of John.  The Apostle declares the intent of his gospel in John 20:31; “But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in Him you will have life.”

Belief is defined in Webster’s as to be convinced of the truth, dependability, or existence of something without demonstrable evidence; to have confidence; trust, rely on through faith.  To say we believe in Jesus is more than a verbal acknowledgment of His existence.  When we believe in Jesus we are to have confidence in Him, we are to trust Him, and rely on Him through faith.

John recorded many things that Jesus said about believing and eternal life, below are a few:

  • Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.  God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.  There is no judgment awaiting those who trust Him.  But those who do not trust Him have already been judged for not believing in the only Son of God."  John 3:15-18

  • Jesus said, “I assure you, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life.  They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”  John 5:24

  • Jesus said, “Don’t be so surprised!  Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son, and they will rise again.  Those who have done good will rise to eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to judgment.  John 5:28-29

  • Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life.  But the Scriptures point to me!  Yet you refuse to come to me so that I can give you this eternal life.”  John 5:39
  • They replied, “What does God want us to do?”  Jesus told them, “This is what God wants you to do:  Believe in the One He has sent.”  John 6:28-29

  • Jesus said, “For it is my Father’s will that all who see His Son and believe in Him should have eternal life—that I should raise them at the last day.”  John 6:40

  • Jesus said, “Then what will you think if you see Me, the Son of Man, return to heaven again?  It is the Spirit who gives eternal life.  Human effort accomplishes nothing.”  John 6:62-63

  • Jesus answered, “Since you don’t know who I am, you don’t know who My Father is.  If you knew Me, then you would know My Father, too.”  John 8:19

  • Jesus said, “That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am who I say I am, you will die in your sins.”  John 8:24
  • Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe Me.  The proof is what I do in the name of My Father.  But you don’t believe Me because you are not part of my flock.  My sheep recognize my voice, I know them, and they follow Me.  I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.  No one will snatch them away from Me, for My Father has given them to Me, and He is more powerful than anyone else.  So no one can take them from Me.  The Father and I are one. John 10:25-30

  • Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life.  Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone else, will live again.  They are given eternal life for believing in Me and will never perish.  John 11:25-26

  • Jesus says, “The world’s sin is unbelief in me.”  John 16:8-9

  • As Jesus prayed He said this, “And this is the way to have eternal life—to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ the One You sent to earth."  John 17:3

We enter heaven only if we believe that Jesus is who He says He is.  If we will but listen and believe in Jesus Christ, we will have eternal life.  The Bible is clear, there are not many roads that lead to heaven.  Some think that living a good life gets one to heaven.  Some think that if our deeds are weighed on a balance and the good outweigh the bad we get to go to heaven;  but our human effort accomplishes nothing.  Only when we believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord do we receive His gift of eternal life.

We must keep the main thing the main thing in our Christian walk.  The main thing is not looking good, or doing good, or even being good, the main thing is belief in Jesus Christ.  When we believe in Jesus then we have confidence in Him, we rely on Him and we trust Him.  To not believe is sin, and therefore, it is important that we repent of any unbelief any time it crops up in our hearts.  We must not ignore the attitude of unbelief.  In prayer, it is a good thing to ask God to help our unbelief!  He wants our faith to increase!

Because of love, God sent Jesus.  God wants us to receive eternal life.  God wants us to believe in Jesus Christ. The only way to know God is to know Jesus Christ.  God is more powerful than anyone and what He says-goes.  Because of the might and power of God, no one or nothing can snatch His kids out of His hands.  God is God, He is Almighty.  Our sins, other people, other churches, the devil, circumstances—nothing is so strong that we will be pulled from God.  We are safe and secure in His hands.  He will do what He says.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from His love.
Death can’t and life can’t.
The angels can’t, and the demons can’t.
Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow,
and even the powers of hell
can’t keep God’s love away.
