Proverbs 1:8-9

Listen to correction

Please read these verses before proceeding.  It is a good idea to pray before reading the Bible.  Ask the Lord to clear your mind of distractions and tell Him your desire to read and to learn.

WE MUST LISTEN TO CORRECTION

Being unteachable is a sin.  Here we are told to LISTEN TO CORRECTION!  We are told not to neglect our mother’s instruction.  God promises a crown of grace and a chain of honor if we listen to our parent’s correction.  We are commanded to honor our parents so that all will go well with us. It is a commandment with a promise.  We miss many blessings if we rebel against our parents.  Our children will miss many blessings if they rebel against us.  As a parent we must make sure that we are instructing our children with God’s wisdom.  As parents, we want the best for our kids – the best thing we can do for our kids is this – LOVE AND HONOR GOD WITH ALL OF OUR HEART AND SOUL.

LISTEN BEFORE YOU SPEAK

Listen, listen, listen!!!!  In James we are told to be quick to listen and slow to speak.  For teachers and leaders, this cannot be stressed enough!  Women, oh how women so want to mother and instruct!  We so want to tell everyone everything we know and straighten them out, it is just in us.

But way to often we can miss the mark of being a great teacher, mother, wife, or friend because we haven’t taken the time to listen.  It may come from the fact that we have never learned to listen to our father, even more maybe we haven’t learned to listen to God, our Heavenly Father.

IT WAS A HUGE DEAL FOR ME TO LEARN TO LISTEN

Listening has been a very hard skill for me to learn!  I have often, very often, been guilty of worrying so much about what I had to say that I never heard what the person was saying to me.  I have been so busy telling God what I thought He should do that I wasn’t listening to Him.  I have learned so much when I started listening, really listening.

First, listening to God brings great insight.  Listening to God’s teachers brings insight.  Listening to my children and grand-kids is delightful.  And even more, now as a teacher, when I shut up and listen, really listen, to those wonderful women God puts in my path that are hurting and in need of love, grace, and a listening ear – I perhaps benefit more than they do.

God has given us two ears and one mouth.  It is wise if we listen twice as much as we speak.

LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN!
