WOMEN BEHIND COWBOYS

Sarai Lied

Genesis 12:10-19

This is an interesting story of Sarai and Abram.  Because of a famine Abram and Sarai go to Egypt.  Abram is afraid of them killing him so he asks his wife to lie.  Abram’s reasoning doesn’t seem to make much sense, but then so very often when we look back at some of our past mistakes we can see the faultiness of our thinking too.  Fear can do strange things to our thinking, we can compromise and encourage others to compromise in our beliefs.

Sarai was a beautiful woman and men were attracted to her.  How might Sarah have felt when Abram asked her to lie and then let these strange men take her away?  I might have been very mad and felt abandoned. How awesome that in the midst of Abram’s and Sarai’s sins God protected them.

The wording of Genesis 12:17 has always caused me to stop and think.  It goes like this, “But the Lord sent terrible plagues upon Pharaoh and his household because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.”  For me this verse says that the Lord held Sarai responsible for her sin.  I don’t believe we are to submit to our husbands when we are asked to sin.  Because it is a sin to lie, and Sarai made the choice to lie, she is held responsible for the horror that came upon Pharoah’s household.
